Allen's Story
Allen’s chronic health problems made holding down a good-paying job very difficult. As a result, he was bouncing around from place to place, renting rooms or staying in a friend’s garage. In 2019, Allen got a call that no parent wants to get: his 9-year-old son could no longer stay with his ex-wife and would need to enter the foster care system. Without a stable place to live with two bedrooms, Allen was unable to take in his son. He was crushed but he didn’t give up.
With Connections’ support, Allen found a one-bedroom place of his own, built up his credit and a positive rental record, and hosted his son for frequent visits. Finally, in summer 2023, Allen secured a two-bedroom apartment in Highland Park, and soon after Allen Jr. was able to move in with his dad. Now he’s a freshman in high school, where he plays football and he is doing great.
Reflecting on Allen’s story, it shows what a privilege it is to walk beside and share in the successes of our participants and their families. Your support of Connections allows the parents we serve to keep their promises to their kids.
